This is the prototype of “The Interceptor,” a device designed by the Ocean Cleanup. The Interceptor helps “stem the flow” of plastic into the ocean.
The prototype was installed in the Cengkareng Drain in Jakarata, Indonesia.
An estimated 80 million metric tons of plastic enter the ocean each year,
and the majority of this pollution comes via rivers. The Interceptor’s long barrier catches debris floating on the water’s surface.
The river’s current then pushes trash along the barrier to the Interceptor’s mouth, where a conveyor belt lifts the debris out of the water.
