Jussi Bjorling is accompanied by The Royal Orchestra, Stockholm conducted by Nils Grevillius.
For those not familiar with Jussi Bjorling, he was born in 1911 in Sweden and throughout his career he was regarded as one of the world' greatest tenors and even today many still rate him as the best ever. He made many wonderful recordings, mostly operatic but many others of different genres. Unfortunately in 1960, the year after he made this recording of O Holy Night, he suffered a heart attack and died at the age of just 49.
I recently uploaded an updated version of this recording which has slightly better audio quality, a spoken Christmas greeting from Jussi, coloured photos and an on screen translation to English. If you wanted to watch/listen to the video the link is [ Ссылка ]
This is the original studio recording unfortunately made in mono because of an error made by the recording engineer. Jussi recorded 8 songs on the day, the first three, the third of which was O Holy Night, were recorded in mono, the remaining 5 in glorious stereo,
I have tried to get the best possible sound from the music and just to give a live effect with more presence I have added applause. The applause is from a Jussi Bjorling Carnegie Hall Concert. Jussi sings in his native language, Swedish.
The original text was from a poem called "Minuit, chretiens" (Midnight, christians) which was written by French wine merchant and poet Placide Cappeau in 1843. Soon afterwards a French composer Adolphe Adam composed the music and the song was called Cantique de Noel (Song of Christmas). In 1855 an American Minister,John Sullivan Dwight produced the well known O Holy Night which is not really a translation but follows the spirit of the original poem
A translation of O Helga Natt to English is as follows:-
Oh Holy Night, Oh holy moment for the world
when the son of God went down to earth
to reconcile the worlds crimes and sins,
for us he suffered the pain of death
and the ray of hope passes through the world
and the light is shimmering over land and sea
People, fall to your knees, and happily honour your freedom
Oh holy night, our salvation you gave
Oh holy night, our salvation you gave
Because our saviour carried our heavy burdens
Our world is free, heaven is open
In your slave you see a beloved brother
and see, your enemy will become dear to you
from heaven our saviour brought us peace
For us he went down in his silent grave
People, fall to your knees, and happily honour your freedom
Oh holy night, our salvation you gave
Oh holy night, our salvation you gave
I've restored/remastered quite a few of Jussi's wonderful recordings either separately or as part of compilation videos and if you want to listen to them all the link to the playlist is
