Moving from Austria to the United States at the age of 21, and barely speaking a word of English, Schwarzenegger envisioned greatness for himself, and then made it happen. From body building, to entrepreneurship, to Hollywood, to politics, Arnold Schwarzenegger excelled at every venture he undertook.

During a commencement speech at the University of Southern California in 2009, Arnold Schwarzenegger outlined his strategy for success into 6 rules:

Rule of Success 1 - TRUST YOURSELF

Rule of Success 2 - BREAK THE RULES

Rule of Success 3 - DON'T BE AFRAID TO FAIL

Rule of Success 4 - DON'T LISTEN TO THE NAYSAYERS

Rule of Success 5 - WORK YOUR BUT OFF

Rule of Success 6 - GIVE BACK


During the commencement speech, Arnold Schwarzenegger explicated rule of success number 4 – don’t listen to naysayers - citing the inspiration Schwarzenegger received from his mother in law Eunice Kennedy Shriver, and the inspiring athletes that participate in the Special Olympics, as an example.

“Pay no attention to the people that say it can’t be done…I remember my mother-in-law, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, when she started Special Olympics in 1968 people said that it would not work. The experts, the doctors that specialized in mental disabilities and mental retardation said, ‘It can’t be done…’ Well, let me tell you something. Now, 40 years later, Special Olympics is one of the greatest organizations, in 164 countries...”
