Marathon runner Yonas Kinde fled Ethiopia because he feared for his life. After a living in refugee camps, he made his way to Luxembourg, where he found political asylum. He has worked to adapt to his new home, taking French classes and driving a taxi to make ends meet. Yonas has continued to run but, until this year, could not compete internationally because of his refugee status.
For the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, the IOC has allowed for the first ever Refugee Olympic Team. Athletes of the highest caliber, but without a nation to represent. They will compete this year under the international Olympic flag – as citizens of the world.
