I didn't speak ANY Japanese before I came to Japan in 2003 to teach English and study Japanese gardening. I had dreams of traveling and meeting new people, but when I finally arrived and couldn't communicate, I felt so sad and alone. I knew no one in the small town where I lived, had no money to travel and thought often about returning to America.
My depression only got worse as I began learning Japanese. I had failed French in high school, and barely passed Spanish in college, so I had very little confidence in myself. I just thought I was one of those people who couldn't learn another language.
I tried going to Japanese lessons, but quit after my fourth class. I didn't understand the teacher and felt too embarrassed to speak. I also studied by myself at home. I bought lots of textbooks, listened to basic Japanese conversations on CDs, and spent WEEKS trying to write vocabulary words on flashcards...
and NOTHING happened!
I couldn't remember what I studied no matter how hard I tried, or understand even the basic things people were saying to me. I was incredibly nervous, so I would just sit and listen while others talked, wishing I could express myself like they did. When I did try to speak, people couldn't understand my pronunciation. And because it took me so long to think about what I wanted to say, people would get impatient and start explaining things in English. I felt angry, stupid and ashamed.
Fortunately, I decided to stay with it, and over the next few years, and with a lot of trial and error, I discovered two very simple truths about language learning that changed the way I thought about learning forever.
I'll talk more about what these two important language learning truths are later, but because understanding them helped me become a fluent speaker of Japanese, I decided
that I had to become a teacher to help everyone else who struggles with language learning to become a great speaker.
I teach because I know what it's like to struggle. I hate how it feels to study something for weeks and STILL not get it. I envied others in Japan who could speak so well, and wondered what was wrong with me, so I decided that once I understood how to learn, it would be my goal to help everyone else in the world who wanted to learn a language.
You're reading this because you, too, have dreams of speaking fluently. And I'm writing this because it's my promise to you to help you make those dreams come true.
