Amidst the rugged beauty of Dip Flat in Marlborough’s Upper Wairau Valley, eleven Security Forces trainees partake in Exercise Ruru, a pivotal chapter in their training.
 
Designed as a Readiness Training Activity, Exercise Ruru is the first time our trainees put their field skills to the test and experience field-based security work as well as extended time on simulated duty. The training encompassed fundamental skills like patrolling, barbed-wire installations, combat techniques, and drill manoeuvres employing pyrotechnics and blank rounds. 
 
At its core, Exercise Ruru prepares these trainees for the vital role of safeguarding air bases during high-threat operations. As part of the Security Forces trade group, their mission is twofold: ensuring the readiness of personnel for operational duties and safeguarding Air Force assets both domestically and during overseas deployments.
