There are 9 criteria for Narcissistic Personality Disorder in the DSM-5 and I am doing a video series on each of the traits. Today I discuss criteria #4, “requires excessive admiration”. The narcissist has an unstable sense of self, and they don’t really know who they are as a person. They feel empty inside. This emptiness is in direct contrast to who they present to the world – a competent and successful person. Because of this emptiness and unstable sense of self, they are incapable of feeling good about themselves on their own. They require excessive admiration from those around them. If you can understand each of the 9 criteria for NPD and the 9 traits of narcissism, then you can better stay a step ahead of the narcissist. Narcissistic Personality Disorder, or narcissism, in a person can be damaging to relationships both for the individual and for those they encounter. People who have narcissistic traits show a lack of empathy and a sense of entitlement that makes it difficult to be around them. However, the narcissist seems oblivious to how they affect others. They live in a fantasy world where their fantasies are designed and maintained by them. Their sense of entitlement makes them truly believe they are better than everyone else. So why do narcissists think they are special and why do narcissists think they are the best? Because they only think about themselves and everything and everyone revolves around them. Narcissists thinks they are better than everyone else because they must maintain that belief to ensure they continue to appear superior and grandiose. Narcissists think they are amazing when no one else does. Interactions with a narcissist and putting up with their narcissistic punishment tactics can be exhausting, and defeating. Protect yourself by knowing how a narcissist is and what makes them act the way they do.
