The history of slavery and mass incarceration in this nation has been a history long swept under the rug for convenience. Other than what’s taught in schools, there isn’t really a place were people can learn about this entire history until now.
Roland Martin talks with Bryan Stevenson the director of the Equal Justice Initiative that’s opening the National Memorial for Peace and Justice and the Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration.
According to Stevenson, there’s, “almost nothing on slavery and lynching, we’ve been working for decades to bring this to life.”
He called attention to the time we’re living in and how Black people have become a target for law enforcement.
“We’re living in a time where we have the highest incarceration rate in the world,” explained. “You can go places where you will be presumed dangerous because of your skin color.”
The purpose of the museum is to educate and open the publics eyes to the history of slavery and incarceration of Black people not just from the past but happening now.
