Meet Brenlee! Born 16 weeks premature, this sweet girl traveled to Nationwide Children’s Hospital all the way from her family home in South Carolina to receive life-saving treatment for a chronic lung disease. Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) develops most often in premature babies born with underdeveloped lungs. It involves abnormal development of the lungs and can sometimes lead to long-term breathing problems for premature babies. Brenlee’s battle with BPD would last for 754 days at Nationwide Children’s. On the 755th day, Brenlee was strong enough to start a new chapter of her journey. She was ready to go home for the first time since she was born. Brenlee’s care teams from the NICU and PICU lined the hospital hallways to cheer on the little girl they had helped grow from infant to toddler. It was a moving and emotional moment for Brenlee’s mom and dad as they goodbye. They had been looking forward to this day for more than two years. The first thing they plan to do when they get home is introduce Brenlee to her new baby sister. Once the family settles into a routine, they hope to plan a trip to the beach and visit the Columbus Zoo as a family of four.
