Mayor of Toronto John Tory said on Monday that Ontario’s framework for reopening, which was announced earlier in the day, is a “safe and responsible approach” and it will guide the work the city's doing to ensure a safe and strong recovery.
He said he works closely with the premier’s office as the recovery of the province is strongly related to its largest city’s recovery.
Mayor Tory announced the launch of Curb TO, a program designed by the city’s transportation division and Toronto public health for encouraging physical distancing for pedestrians passing lineups and each other on narrow sidewalks.
The program will start with 10 sites and will expand to more than 100 locations across the city, giving an increased access to temporary parking opportunities for quick food and essential medicine pickups and deliveries.
Dr. Eileen de Villa, Toronto’s medical officer of health reported a total of 4,973 cases of COVID-19 in Toronto on Monday, including 4,493 confirmed cases and 480 probable cases.
She also reported that 308 people are currently hospitalized from COVID-19, and 104 people in intensive care.
A total of 297 deaths due to COVID-19 were reported in Toronto as of Monday.
According to de Villa, the city has to consider important parameters before reopening as announced by Premier Ford earlier Monday, including a continuous decrease of COVID-19 new cases, sufficient acute and critical health care capacity, the availability of personal protective equipment (PPE), sufficient case and contact tracing capacity and the ability to rapidly identify new cases and outbreaks.
