Using a hot water bottle is just one way to keep warm and reduce energy costs. It can be done safely but even so, is still not entirely environmentally sound due to the manufacturing process of creating the bottles and then heating the water to use in the bottle. Don't forget that you could always use that cooled water for cleaning or something else after instead of pouring it straight down the drain.
