This recording is actually so funny to me - Russell called me for a private gig at someone's house in upstate New York during the height of the pandemic, summer 2020, and as a result, we were REALLY eager to get as much real playing with REAL humans as possible. Russell and Kyle were still playing a considerable amount with each other, and with Emmet Cohen, but until this gig, I played with others maybe a total of 2 other times since March of that year. I felt kind of a transformation of sorts during this period of isolation, and a lot of my ideas were kind of unhinged, yet I discovered ways to be even more melodic with my playing as well. All-in-all, some positive growth happened, but when paired with this group of people who were also doing the same kind of growing in their own ways, we were bound to make some serious music no matter what we played.
I say "no matter what we play" because we're also the type of people that don't care about cliches or tunes that are "overplayed". We understand that songs that are overplayed are overplayed for a reason - they are good songs that people found value in... BUT also we're bored and haven't played with each other in so long, so why not play old tunes we haven't played in years just because? The result was this rather interesting "party-cocktail" version (not "cocktail-party" - the party was first in this one) of Blue Bossa that ended up getting its ending interrupted because it was apparently time for us to eat LOL. Like the moment a mother tells the kids to stop playing and come inside, we kind of dropped our things and ran at the first opportunity for a bite.
Either way, I like posting these things because I feel like it's the lowest-profile gigs that have the most interesting performances sometimes, and they never get recorded. Whenever I can, I like to keep my phone on to capture special moments like these that might be history in the future! Let me know if you like these kinds of uploads!
What are your favorite tunes to play that you feel are never played because they are seen as too "basic"?
