(5 Jun 1989) President George H.W. Bush lent his moral support to the students struggling for democracy in China. Four Chinese graduate students were ushered into the Oval Office for a meeting with the president of the United States. The White House had rounded up the guests by contacting local universities and asking for names of Chinese students active in support of the pro-democracy demonstrations in their homeland. Like state visitors, the four students had their pictures taken and their words recorded by a horde of reporters on hand to chronicle the opening of the meeting.
