The major German fuel supplier Oiltanking GmbH, who supplies gasoline to 26 companies including 1,995 Shell gasoline stations in the country from their 13 tank farms, has fallen victim of a cyberattack.
The group responsible for the attack, as well as the nature of the attack, have not yet been released. However, it is suspected that the attack is likely a ransomware attack, possibly at the hands of the nationstate threat group commonly known as APT27 or Emissary Panda.
Oiltanking learned of the attack on January 29th, and immediately took the affected systems offline and launched an investigation into the attack. Some of the affected systems control tank loading and unloading automation, without a manual fallback option, leading to possible supply chain issues if the problem is not resolved quickly.
No matter what type of cyberattack you may encounter, Acronis Cyber Protect includes Active Protection to detect and stop ransomware before your data is put at risk, and the AI-powered and Behavioral Detection Engines block other types of malware to ensure the attacks are stopped before they can start.
