Meet Volo Levantein! He is one of the supporting characters in the Alicization Arc of Sword Art Online. As the first-ranked Elite Disciple in the Imperial Swordcraft Academy in North Centoria, Volo acts as the main rival to the second-ranked Elite Disciple, Sortiliena Serlut.
Born into a second class noble family in Underworld, he was trained in the High-Norkian Sword Style. The signature technique of this sword style is a Sword Skill for the two-handed sword named “Mountain Splitting Wave”, the Underworld equivalent of the high-level, 1-hit Skill “Avalanche” from Sword Art Online and New ALfheim Online.
But Volo manages to amplify the power of the already powerful skill with his sheer confidence and imagination, solidified by the generations of training and bloodshed conducted by his family to hone the skill. This confidence was the main factor in his ascent to the position of First Seat at the Academy and his consecutive victories against the Second Seat Sortiliena Serlut, whom he managed to defeat on 3 separate occasions during their time at the academy.
One day, Volo wandered out to his usual secluded training spot at the academy forest to the east of the academy grounds on a rest day, only to discover Kirito practicing Sword Skills at the same spot. He became interested in the boy's skills and continued observing him until Kirito accidentally flung dirt at Volo’s uniform when he failed one of his skills. Since Volo himself also sought ways to practice even on rest days, despite the academy rules not allowing it, the First Seat decided to let Kirito’s breach of rules slide. However, he decided to use his disciplinary punishment rights on Kirito for throwing dirt to his uniform to force Kirito into a duel using real swords!
