Style is usually the thing that gets us interested in singing, but sometimes it can actually be our worst enemy because it’s not always good for our voice in the long term.
[02:45]
I've heard a few technically near perfect voices, but sometimes the performance doesn’t sound right from a stylistic perspective. Believe it or not the technical approach is not always the best approach when trying to achieve a particular sound.
[03:28]
I believe, the 80/20 rule applies to singing and speaking. Basically, do the healthy thing 80 percent of the time and the body will tolerate the 20.
[04:54]
I noticed that my speaking voice was scratchy after three hours, and that I was trying to soften my voice without realizing it, and that was causing some voice problems. So I changed my speaking voice to be more compressed utilizing the full pitch and dynamic range.
[05:40]
By adopting healthy vocal habits most of the time, my voice would last much longer and I could speak for longer periods of time. So one thing I try not to do is gasp for air when I'm taking in a breath and then slow release the air while talking.
[06:36]
Think of your voice the same way you do junk food. Occasionally you may want to eat a Big Mac, but you should also be mindful of our health and diet. Try to maintain a healthy balance of good vocal habits.
[07:14]
I think of artists like Louis Armstrong who is widely know but for only a couple of songs. A voice coach might have railed him for having bad technique but yet his sound is iconic.
[08:14]
Louis Armstrong had a specific voice that we know and love. I guess if I were his coach I would say only use that voice when you absolutely have to and use properly voice habits the rest of the time. There are some vocal styles that can cause damage to your voice so it is important to be vigilant and proactive.
[09:05]
One of the most common issues I come across with singers is too much breathiness. If you notice that your voice is too breathy, you might want to adjust your technique.
[10:21]
Another common problem among singers is placing their voice in the lower throat. If you do this, your voice will grow weaker over time and your range will diminish.
[11:15]
Singers like Mariah Carey, put a lot of pressure on the lower throat have damage their voice as a result. The healthiest part of the voice to sing with is the middle part of the voice with a neutral larynx.
[12:34]
When we push our larynx up to high, we tend to sound a little bit like Jerry Lewis, so try to avoid pushing your larynx up when you sing high notes.
[13:31]
In conclusion, I want to leave you with this. If you have to choose between style and technique, favor style in the moment, but in the long term, favor technique.
