The brand is named after a famous astronomer from the 16th century called Nicolaus Copernicus. Nicolaus Copernicus was a Polish astronomer and mathematician known as the father of modern astronomy. He was the first European scientist to propose that Earth and other planets revolve around the sun, essentially proposing the heliocentric theory of the solar system.
Sébastien's Meyer expertise is in fashion design. He infuses a thorough knowledge of embroidery techniques through his work, streamlined with a linear sensibility that marries exhaustive origami-like techniques with a neat, ‘sportif’ silhouette.
Arnaud Vaillant has a business background and runs the business operations of Coperni, he previously worked at Balenciaga and Chanel.
They met each other in 2009 at Mod'Art International Paris, where Meyer studied design and sewing and Vaillant did business and fashion management.
The brands aesthetic is very Minimal and simple but playful and chic at the same time. They like to mix styles from different eras but try to have a futuristic edge to whatever they create. Their work is about discovering what’s next. In a similar way to Copernicus’ obsession with solving problems that would go on to help future scientists.
In 2015 Arnaud and Sébastien were appointed Creative Directors of the historic French brand Courrèges and they put their brand on pause to focus on the role.
After two years they left Courreges and went on to relaunch Coperni in 2018.
The Swipe Bag made its debut in Coperni’s FW19 collection.
Sebastian inspiration points come mainly from art, architecture and technology (he has even cited Steve Jobs as one of his role models). It is no surprise that iphone inspires so much of the designs. The most successful Coperni bag, the swipe bags was inspired by Sebastien’s research into multiple apple digital icons including the wifi symbol, airplane mode and the swipe button which inspired the shape of the bag. There are other bags such as the app bag that follow the same thought process.
Since the debut of the swipe bag in Coperni’s FW19 collection it has been a hit and has been seen on everyone from Doja Cat to Dua Lipa.
In their resort 2021 collection – they presented looks as of their typical sculptural and sexy tailoring as iPhone screenshots.
With all of this understanding – looking at their latest SS23 collection makes complete sense. This collection has technology and futurism plastered all over it. Starting from the florals which were digitally scanned and layered to create lenticular flower prints that bloom as they move – almost creating the appearance of a hologram.
Of course, the huge moment that made this collection viral was the spray on dress worn by Bella Hadid. Bella Hadid took centre stage and posed for minutes as a solution comprising of cellulose was sprayed on her creating a dress. It was further styled and a slit was cut before she showcased the technology across the room. Manel Torres, the person who created the spray-on material and the company behind it, Fabrican, which was founded in 2003, says it can be washed and re-worn, or put back in the can and resprayed later.
Conceptually it definitely resembles the McQueen SS1999 show where robots usually used to spray paint cars was used to paint a dress during the show.
What fascinates me about this technology – long lasting but perfect fitting vest – a tank top for the future, the press from the runway has given the company a lot of exposure - Cellulose formulation - through the process of spraying it becomes an instant non woven fabric.
Also, a few looks in the collection featured the spray on technology – pre-applied before the start of the show.
