Today’s video is about mastering fertilizer management and plant nutrition mineral absorption, with useful agriculture fertilizer info from M. S. Karla Garcia, as she discusses fertilizers and nutrients for growing in greenhouses and hydroponics.
Key takeaways from this video include:
- What are the essential nutrients my crops need?
- What fertilizers do I need to grow my crops in a greenhouse?
- What are the best organic or traditional fertilizers?
- What about water source?
The topic of fertilizer management can get really complex, but we'll review the most important general aspects. First, what we need to know in order to keep our crop healthy and with good nutrition is that all plants require essential elements to grow healthy. These elements are grouped into categories; the macronutrients and the macronutrients.
Macronutrients are required in large quantities. Usually when you buy a fertilizer, we can look for the N-P-K content, because nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are very important macronutrients, and usually are required in larger quantities than the rest of the nutrients. Micronutrients are required sometimes in very little quantities, but all of them are essential, and plants cannot live without them.
So how do we apply these nutrients in hydroponics? There are two general ways to do it. We can do it with traditional hydroponics, which use chemical compounds to provide nutrition to our crops, and organic hydroponic fertilizers, which are based on nutrients derived from organic plants, animal material, or natural mined compounds.
In order to understand how to provide nutrients and maintain nutrition in a hydroponic system, we first need to learn there are a lot of hydroponic systems, but we can group them all in two categories; the closed systems and open systems. Systems are where water or nutrient solution is recirculated. We can continue to use the same water by providing the correct management water source quality. This system is pretty important, as well as the continued adjustment of nutrients and pH in order to provide the best nutrition to our plants.
What is the significance of fertilizer management? Fertilization is an important part of farming that has an impact on both crop productivity and environmental quality. Based on crop requirements, peak harvest seasons, and the soil's natural ability to give nutrients, the goal is to assure adequate nutrient levels.
What are the three nutrients that plants require? Soil is an important source of nutrients for plant growth. Nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) are the three most important nutrients (K). The trio known as NPK is made up of them. Calcium, magnesium, and sulfur are also vital nutrients.
The three essential plant nutrients, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, are found in most fertilizers used in agriculture. Certain micronutrients, such as zinc and other metals, are also present in some fertilizers and are required for plant growth. Soil amendments are materials that are applied to the land primarily to improve soil qualities (rather than to provide plant food). Fertilizers and soil supplements can be made from a variety of sources, including virgin raw materials, composts and other organic matter, and wastes such as sewage sludge and industrial waste. Surface water and groundwater have been contaminated as a result of excessive fertilizer use.
