The permaculture principle of "chop and drop" is something I've been using for years in my food forest projects, even since I learned it from Geoff Lawton. I've thrown leaves and grass clippings in my annual beds before, but this time Rachel and I are trying something different in our overgrown bell pepper bed. We're using the wild amaranth as a chop and drop plant to see how it works out. It should be a great green manure as well as a good mulch, feeding the soil from above and composting in place, Back to Eden, Lasagna Gardening, no-till or Ruth Stout style. Take your pick! It's an easy composting method, just dropping weeds on the ground around the plants. We'll see if a million seedlings come up in a few weeks...
