A study of more than 121,000 people conducted by an international consortium called SCHEMA has identified 10 genes where rare mutations can greatly increase a person's risk of developing schizophrenia. Neuroscientist Morgan Shen and SCHEMA leaders Tarjinder Singh and Benjamin Neale -- all from the Stanley Center of Psychiatric Research at Broad -- explain how these 10 genes provide new insights into the biological basis of schizophrenia, as well as new directions for the development of diagnostic tests, biomarkers, and treatments that could help people living with schizophrenia.
