Basil is an annual or perennial herb used for its leaves. The plant can reach 150 cm in high, although it is commonly around 30 cm high. The leaves size can be 11 cm long and 6 cm wide, depending on the used variety. I used the Genovese variety in this video.
Basil in general loves bright light, the plant will suffer in low light conditions greatly and may die. It also loves a sufficient supply with nutrients, especially nitrogen. Basil does not like moistening the leaves when watering, you should always water it from the ground. It is also very thirsty due the large leaves.
It is not very realistic that basil will survive the winter without supplementary light sources.
If you buy basil in the Supermarket and it dies often fast, try to supplement it with nutrients, keep it always watered from the bottom (not soaked wet) and put it to a warm and bright place.
