And so I’ve always wanted to see the reaction between aluminum and hydrochloric acid because I heard that it was vigorous and energetic. So I added a ball of aluminum foil to a some dilute hydrochloric acid. And it took a while for the reaction to get going, but once it did, things happened quickly as you can see. It looks like I added a little too much foil to the acid cause things got kinda spurty and messy for a while. But, overall, I thought it was a pretty fantastic reaction.
The reaction is an example of a single replacement chemical reaction and the balanced equation that describes this reaction is written below. The reaction is also very exothermic and, as such, it releases lots of heat during the reaction.
2Al(s)+6HCl(aq)→3H2(g)+2AlCl3(aq)
