The Story of Karus and Daidalos
In ancient Greek mythology, the story of Icarus and Daidalos tells of courage, ambition and tragedy. Daidalos was one of the greatest inventors and craftsmen of ancient Greece. Working under King Minos of Crete, Daidalos built the Labyrinth at the king's request. This labyrinth was designed to imprison the Minotaur, half man and half bull.

However, Daidalos and his son Icarus attracted the anger of King Minos and were imprisoned in the labyrinth. Daidalos, thanks to his intelligence, devises an escape plan. He makes wings for himself and his son using bird feathers and wax. Daidalos gives Icarus an important warning before flying: ‘Do not fly too low, for the humidity of the sea will make your wings heavy, nor too high, for the heat of the sun will melt the wax of your wings.’

However, with the excitement of freedom and flying, Icarus forgets his father's warnings and starts to fly higher, towards the sun. The heat of the sun melts the wax and Icarus' wings fall apart. Icarus falls into the Aegean Sea and loses his life. His father, Daidalos, witnesses the death of his son and continues on his way in great sorrow.

This story dramatises the consequences of ambition and disobedience and explains the mythological origin of Icarus Island, known as ‘the place where Icarus fell’.
