Natey Jones and Alexandra Burke opened up about their experiences filming Dionne Edwards' debut feature 'Pretty Red Dress'. Burke was drawn to her character Candice due to their shared familial bonds and a persistent drive for self-improvement, celebrating the film's ability to spark essential conversations about living authentic lives.
Jones took us into the world of his character Travis, who is caught in a struggle to reconcile his black masculinity with his inherent femininity. He lauded the opportunity to tell a nuanced story about a black family, moving away from stereotypes and encouraging empathy for characters dealing with their internal battles.
The pair also shared about their experiences filming intimate scenes, acknowledging the invaluable assistance of an intimacy coordinator. Burke spoke highly of working with her on-screen daughter, actor Temi Lola, and the special bond they formed. The red dress, an important motif in the film, was discussed as a character of its own, symbolising different things at different moments in the story.
The two actors highlighted their admiration for the film's creators, Dionne and Georgia, and expressed a shared disappointment that the filming had come to an end. They hope the film will prompt important conversations and offer viewers a deeply human portrayal of a unique family unit.
