Meet Yankee Ned, this image from our collection was simply titled ‘Yankee Ned and his grandchildren’. Taken by the Governor of Queensland, Sir William MacGregor during his tour of the Torres Strait Region in 1911.

Yankee Ned was Edward Mosby, a Civil War Veteran who deserted the US and made his way to Australia.

After a conflict on a whaling schooner, Ned fled north to the island of Masiq, now known as Yorke Island.

He settled down, married and started a local business retrieving pearls. This is where the treasure comes into it.

Towards the end of his life, Yankee Ned spotted a Japanese pearl diver spying on him. In fear of losing his valuable pearls, he buried them somewhere on Yorke island. Their location has never been revealed.

Yankee Ned was buried on Thursday Island, his legacy lives on, the good deeds he accomplished in his life and how we helped his island home flourish.
