In this video, Dr Entesar Al Hammadi, pediatric nephrologist at Dubai, discusses the approach to antenatally diagnosed renal pelvic dilation or hydronephrosis. The timing of the initial scan is important-to avoid scanning in first 3 days unless there was a serious concern of severe abnormality. Subsequent management, need for antibiotic prophylaxis etc would depend on the findings of the postnatal scan. Bilateral renal pelvic dilation in a boy should raise suspicion of posterior urethral valve and should be dealt with cautiously, monitoring urine stream etc.
