Could this be the BEST multi-purpose, modular Lighting solution for Photographers, Film Makers, and Content Creatives?? Team Reflector decided to find out, by putting the almost Lego-like SPEKULAR lighting system by Spiffy Gear through it's paces!
Disclosure:
Right off the bat Spiffy gear were kind enough to sent us 2 sets of their Spekular lighting system to check out - and to feed back to them from our perspective as Indie Film makers and photographers - but we were NOT told what to say and whilst we’re not getting paid by them in any way, they have given us an affiliate link (above) to pass on to you guys - so if you’re interested in checking this product out yourselves, please click that link and it will really help us in bringing you more content like this in the future…
Quick overview:
This is a cool modular, dim-able lighting system with a decent colour temperature of 5500k - 5750 kelvin and a CRi of 94. They can be mounted in a variety of different ways using the in-built rail system on each light and you can even attach colour gels to them as you’ll see in the video.
In The Box:
You get a decently built hard fabric case, containing everything you need to make some rather cool lighting combinations. You get four of the actual light bars - one “master” and three “slave” units, the only difference being the master unit has an on/off switch and a brightness dial. As well as that you get four multi-angle connectors, a light stand mount, 8 gel clips, and of course the wall plug, which is a 110-240watt brick (similar to what you get with most Laptops) that outputs 24v DC to an industry standard barrel connector.
Optional Extras:
We were also sent two Spekular extension kits, which each contain 2 extension cables, 2 H-connectors for mounting 2 light bars in parallel, and 2 mounting adaptors with 1/4-20 threads - but of course these are optional extras.
Usability:
And in our opinion, it’s the included hard plastic multi-angle connectors that really make this set special - with them you can literally build whatever lighting rig you can imagine in your head - a lot like playing with Lego. Want a ring light? Sure - use all four multi angle connectors and make one! Need a fill light? Click two bars together with a light stand and there’s your fill. Key light? No problem, arrange all four on top of one another and adjust the brightness accordingly!
And you’re not just limited to using the included hard connectors - spiffy gear does make available lots of weird and wonderful connectors including a star shaped one for… artistic reasons?? And of course with the optional extension kit you can simply connect each light bar using the extension wire connectors, meaning you can mount/hide these things pretty much anywhere - although as feedback to Spiffy gear these are proprietary connectors using a rather thin plastic connector - about the thickness of a credit card, which perhaps under heavy industry rigging use, may break in not-so gentle hands, but on any average indie film/lower budget set this probably wouldn’t be an issue.
The feedback we’ve given to spiffy gear is perhaps the next version could use power over USB-C as the connection type - as it’s the way things are going right now and the average camera operator does tend to carry a load of these in their bags - meaning if a cable fails, you’re probably gonna have a spare one to use in a pinch and therefore your shoot day isn’t paused, and you could also power a single one of these using a battery bank or all of them using V-mount with USB, meaning wireless lights for more remote on-location shoots - although it’s worth noting that Spiffy Gear does make a Spekular Battery Adaptor - although no battery is included with this option.
Conclusion:
Overall though we really do like this modular set and have used them now in a variety of scenarios including Corporate, talking head interviews, an indie film shoot, wedding, and even toy product shots and each time we found them reliable, easy to use and the light quality meant post-processing wasn’t a headache. If you’re a photographer, corporate shooter, indie film maker or even a solo Youtuber you honestly can’t get much better for the money in our opinion….
