Las Galeras is a small village in the North-East of Samana in the Dominican Republic. Most people who visit Samana stay in Santa Barbara de Samana and visit Las Galeras by a rented motorbike or car, but you can also take one of the many pickup taxi's, for example along the main road at the pier of Santa Barbara. It will only cost you about 60-100 Pesos for a 40 minutes ride.
I took a pick--up taxi to La Playita, which is a popular but laid back beach where forest meets the ocean. The beach was much cleaner than I expected. Unfortunately it started raining shortly after I arrived so I couldn't enjoy it long enough but I can still recommend a visit.
After the rain stopped I continued to Playa Grande, which is a large public beach. This beach starts with brown sand that crossdissolves into white sand. The water was very beautiful even though it was very cloudy. In the distance you can see a tiny island on the West-Side of the bach and the forest of Playa Rincon. During dry season many boats take tourists from Playa Grande to Playa Rincon or Playa Fronton, because they're hard to reach by foot. During wet season these beaches are usually full of sargassum, which is a type of seaweed that has been a progressing problem in the Caribbean for many years, possibly because of the climate change. Therefore most boats don't operate.
Playa Grande is connected with Playa Aserradero, which is a beautiful beach but with hotels and resorts instead of forest. I can also imagine how busy it can be during the dry season. Not my favourite.
Would I say that Las Galeras is a must see and one of the best places to visit in the Dominican republic. I definitely recommend a visit but I don't think it should be your priority destination if you don't have much time in Samana. If you do, I recommend to stay at least 2 days in Las Galeras if you really want to enjoy, especially if you also want to visit the worldfamous secluded beaches Playa Fronton and Playa Rincon. Don't expect more than beaches in this area. It is quite a small village so there's not much to do, especially at night.
Thanks for watching the vlog or reading the blog and I hope to see you join my adventures!
