Why 5G will be more Important than you think?
As the successor to 4G, 5G is set to completely transform the way we do business. Organisations as well as individuals need to prepare for the possibilities that this next-generation connectivity will offer with those that are fastest to embrace the changes set to gain a competitive advantage over others. How 5G impacts Job Market
Of course, innovation also regularly destroys jobs. The question cannot therefore be limited to the number of jobs that AI will destroy, we must also consider those it will create. While it is equally difficult to predict one or the other, it is generally estimated that automation will create more jobs than it will destroy.
We need to also change the perspective of next generation technology as something that is going to wipe out employment and instead understand the opportunities to drive skilled employment opportunities alongside the efficiency gains that will deliver a cleaner environment that can also allow for economic growth.
Robots create jobs
The World Economic Forum predicts nearly 60 million extra jobs will be created by 2022, thanks to the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Some already observable phenomena support this idea. For example of Amazon, a company that is a champion of robotization. The American multinational relies on drones to deliver its packages, has deployed robots to move packages in its warehouses, and invested in an automated cash register system. However, this forced-running robotization has not been accompanied by a wave of redundancies, quite the contrary Amazon’s workforce also increased by 50%. Some older industries and processes will disappear and as a result jobs will go and new ones will be created. What we need is a radical overhaul of strategies and attitudes towards education, training and re-skilling targeting across all age groups from those at school today as well also the older more experienced workers. As a society we need a transformation in skills training and retraining to take advantage of the opportunities that 5G and AI working together will present.
The rise of “micro-tasks”
Companies that are at the forefront of AI research have an increasing need for manpower to perform all these additional tasks that algorithms cannot handle. Take the case of autonomous cars. In order for them to be able to decipher traffic signs and distinguish a cyclist from a pedestrian, their software must be fed with large quantities of videos illustrating these different types of situations. But these videos must first be labelled by humans so that the machines can understand them (the video must for example be accompanied by a description specifying that this is a pedestrian, a cyclist, etc.). Once the algorithm has been trained and deployed, the role of humans does not end: they must now ensure that it works properly and provide opportunities for improvement.
Of course, new jobs will compensate for the disappearance of the former, but the qualifications required to fill them will not be the same. The jobs most at risk from AI would be those that require few qualifications: cashiers put out of work by automatic cash registers, call center employees threatened by artificial speech intelligences, delivery workers replaced by delivery robots… Some of the jobs that are expected to go away include data entry, payroll and certain accounting functions. "
