Mayor of Toronto John Tory provided an update on the city's COVID-19 response on Monday alongside with the city's medical officer of health Dr. Eileen de Villa and Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg.
Mayor Tory addressed the peaceful anti-racism which protests took place in Toronto over the weekend and thanked protesters for coming together peacefully to protest, "we heard the message loud and clear," he said.
Mayor Tory said the city's board of health recognized anti-Black racism as a public health crisis and asked Dr. Eillen de Villa for recommendations in the 2021 budget and the COVID-19 recovery plan on re-prioritizing the city’s resources towards better addressing the social determinants of health including specifically the focus on anti-Black racism.
The Mayor thanked Ontario Premier Doug Ford on his sensitive regional approach of reopening the economy that was announced Monday and said that it was actually a concern raised by himself and the city's medical officer of health.
Tory also thanked Doug Ford for his decision to ban commercial evictions for businesses struggling to pay their rents and said “this ban is absolutely the right thing to do.”
The city's mayor reacted on Toronto's Chief of Police Mark Saunders' announcement of retirement on Monday by saying he wishes him all the best and thanks him for his service.
Mayor Tory said he will be announcing soon more details on the city’s restart plans for Camp TO, a plan to help kids safely go to day camps this summer, and for Swim TO, the plan to reopen pools and other aquatic facilities.
