Located in the city of Dunhuang, Gansu Province, the Mogao Caves are one of the world's famous ancient art treasures. Built during the Sixteen Kingdoms period, the caves have a history of over 1,500 years. They house a vast collection of Buddhist murals, sculptures, and scriptures, which are renowned as a "wonder of Eastern art."
The Mogao Caves consist of 735 grottoes, with more than 400,000 square meters of mural area. Among them, the exquisite Five Caves are representative works, featuring ingenious layout, colorful colors, and realistic images. The northern palace and Magu Caves are also included, which focus on statues. The most striking feature of the Mogao Caves is the precious heritage of the Luoshen Buddha. This statue, which stands at a height of 34.5 meters, is the largest surviving ancient stone cave statue in China.
In addition to Buddhist art, the Mogao Caves also contain a rich and colorful array of folk and historical culture, such as murals from the Western Xia and Yuan dynasties, and Tang Dynasty tombstones. These provide valuable resources for the study of ancient Chinese society, culture, and art.
