Color Range is one of the powerful new Masking Tools in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic version 11. Color Range Masks are a great way to target changes to a specific area, or an object, in your photograph that has a distinct color.

To select a color for your Mask, activate the Color Range Sampler tool and then click the eyedropper icon over the area that you want to change. For more accurate color selections, you can add up to five color sample points by holding down the Shift key on your keyboard before you click the right-button on your mouse.

You can also click and drag out a rectangle to select a wider area of colors. This is the method that I prefer and it is the method that I use throughout this video tutorial.

If needed, you can remove an existing color sample point by holding down the Alt / Option key (Mac) /Alt key (Windows) and then clicking on the sample point that you want to delete. Finally, you can use the Refine slider that appears inside of the Masking Panel after you have made a selection to expand or contract the range of selected colors.

When you move the Refine slider to the right, you are telling Lightroom Classic that you want to expand your selection into colors that are adjacent to the ones that you have already selected using the color sampler tool.

Thanks to the new Color Range Masking tool, we can often make precise improvements to specific regions in our raw images without the need for lots of tedious brush work in Lightroom Classic or time-consuming trips over to Adobe Photoshop.
