Subscribe here: [ Ссылка ] The war in Russia has changed the face of Europe, said the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, upon his arrival on the second day of the summit. “One thing is clear, this horrific war has forever changed the face of Europe, as we can see from the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO”, said the president, reiterating her congratulations in Stockholm on the future accession to the Atlantic Alliance. “We also see that everyone understood that it's not just about the war unleashed by Russia against Ukraine, but about understanding who we are and what the rules are globally. We will never accept that force prevails over law. We are determined to defend international law, the Charter of the United Nations. And that is what unites us here in Vilnius,” concluded von der Leyen.
The pace with which Ukraine is carrying out the reforms necessary for EU accession is "impressive". “We have an important contribution to make to Ukraine's desire not only to be a member of the European Union, but also to join NATO. To this end, reforms, institution building and the fight against corruption are indispensable,” she said. “The European Commission is working intensively with Ukraine to implement these reforms. It is amazing to see how quickly Ukraine is reforming despite the war. The speed with which Ukraine is advancing in EU membership is impressive,” she added.
“It is a merit-based process and we see the enthusiasm and intensity with which Ukraine is carrying out reforms. I am therefore very confident that if they continue to move forward at this speed, they will soon reach their goal. It is a great example, demonstrating that it is possible to advance rapidly towards membership if the necessary conditions are met,” concluded von der Leyen.
