COVID-19 isn't the only virus you need to get protection from right now. It's that time of year when health officials are urging people to get their flu shots -- Experts say getting vaccinated against the flu and COVID-19 can prevent a "twindemic" that fills hospitals with patients suffering from both.
WCNC Charlotte's VERIFY team has received many questions about the flu shot. Fred Shropshire is answering your questions about the flu vaccine and why doctors say when you get the flu shot is as important as making the decision to get it.
The first and most popular question: Can you get the flu from the flu vaccine?
ANSWER: The CDC says flu vaccines CANNOT cause flu illness. Dr. Lucinda DeMarco, the chief medical officer for United Healthcare South Carolina, agrees. DeMarco said you may get a little bit of a low-level case of what feels like the flu, and you can get some mild side effects like body aches and soreness. You may even run a little bit of a fever but that's just your body's reaction to the vaccine, not a full-blown case of the flu. #WakeUpCLT #VERIFY #FluShot
QUESTION: What if I don't get any side effects? Did the vaccine not work?
ANSWER: No. DeMarco says your body will react to the virus. It may not completely obliterate it but it's going to decrease the severity of illness, and that's the entire point of the flu shot.
