Sainte Mère Église was the first town to be liberated by US Forces on D-Day. Men of the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne took the town and held it until reinforced by troops of the 4th Infantry Division landing at Utah Beach.

Now every June, Sainte Mère Église is the hub for the D-Day Commemorations on the Cotentin Peninsula.
