The fictitious “Death Star” from the popular Star Wars franchise can shoot powerful beams of radiation across space, but what happens in the real Universe far surpasses what science fiction has to offer. Take for instance the Pictor A galaxy. The supermassive black hole at the center of this double-lobed radio galaxy releases a huge amount of gravitational energy as material swirls towards the event horizon.
