Using an HVLP (High Volume, Low Pressure) spray gun for finishes has become increasingly common in woodworking. Spray finishes allow you to achieve greater uniformity and increase finish speeds along with using finishes that wouldn’t be easy or possible to brush on.

In this video I break open my new HVLP gun I purchased from Harbor Freight to get it set up, learn how it works, and get a feel for the mechanics of it.

At a high level, you’re going to need 5 things to set up your HVLP spray gun.
1. Air compressor with sufficient flow rate and capacity to support your gun
2. Hose to go from your compressor to your gun
3. Water/Oil filter on your air line to remove both before the gun
4. Pressure gauge to fine tune your pressures prior to entering the gun
5. The HVLP gun itself
