STORYLINE:
The Danube river in Europe was receding on Wednesday, after melting snow and heavy rain caused the river to swell, seriously flooding several countries.
The floods caused extensive damage to homes and farmland.
Some residents in the town of Ritopek in Serbia were able to return to their homes, where they had their first chance to inspect water damage.
Although the river levels were receding, many streets in the Ritopek province remained submerged in water, and many buildings were still reliant upon sandbag barriers.
Thousands of workers, residents, volunteers and soldiers were still guarding the embankments and piling more sandbags to prevent further floods.
Medical teams and sanitation inspectors fanned out across the flooded areas to watch for possible cases of disease.
Officials also warned that although water levels were receding in some areas no residents would be allowed back in before a thorough clean up and disinfection.
