Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has clarified that the amendment to the Kerala Police Act will in no way curtail freedom of speech and that it is aimed at stopping online harassment and cyberbullying.
The amendment received criticism for opposition parties, who feel that the “draconian” ordinance will give police unnecessary power to curtail freedom of the press and silence critics of the government.
As per the ordinance, the law is aimed at stopping cyberbullying, insulting and disgracing individuals on online platforms. Offenders are likely to face a jail term of up to five years or a penalty of Rs 10,000. In some cases, both the jail term and penalty may apply.
