Boiled Coke With Ginger and Lemon is a very popular home cold remedy for dry coughs and sore throat relief. As a kid growing up, I would often drink this to help recover from coughs and sore throat symptoms.
Although it has not been scientifically proven and Coke is not something you would usually turn to when you’re feeling sick, it has proven effective to many who have had the drink and it’s also become a staple drink option at many HK style cafes.
How Does It Work? What Are The Benefits?
The caramelisation and spiciness of the ginger and lemon will help to act as a demulcent that coats the throat and clears your sinuses. After taking one sip, it will instantly soothe your irritated throat and warm you from the inside. What's more important is that it’s actually quite tasty! My advice would be to drink it while it’s still hot as it tends to get spicier when left cold.
In this demonstration, I’ve decided to use no sugar Coke to minimise my sugar intake.
Ingredients
1 can of coke (375ml)
2-3 slices of ginger (I like to slice mine ½ cm thick)
½ a lemon
Honey (optional)
Directions
1. Thinly slice the ginger and lemon
2. Add coke, ginger and lemon to a saucepan
3. Boil over high heat and reduce the heat to let it simmer for 5-10 minutes.
Tip: Don’t boil for too long or it will become a syrup
4. Pour into a cup and serve. Optional: use a mesh strainer
