Ranbir Singh was accused of being an active terrorist by the British government and was awarded the Death sentence in 1931 for the Punjab Governor Shooting Conspiracy Case. He remained in a condemned cell in Lahore Central Jail for about 8 months, was acquitted by the Punjab High Court and then released in March 1932. He was a member of Hindustan Socialist Republican Army (HSRA) from 1928-31 and was nominated as a Civilian Governor of Punjab in 1929 by HSRA.
We are commemorating Ranbir Singh’s 111th birthday by starting the lecture series in his memory. The memorial lecture led by professor S. Irfan Habib and was dedicated to The Legacy of Bhagat Singh. Bhagat Singh is mostly known as a martyr but his political and social vision inspired many for generations to come. Ranbir, like Bhagat Singh inspired his contemporaries through his vision. As a journalist and an author, he used his words as a tool to reach out to everyone possible in the vastness of the country.

Professor Habib is first and foremost a historian of science and a public intellectual. He held the Maulana Azad Chair at the National University of Educational Planning and Administration, and before that he was a scientist at the National Institute of Science, Technology and Development Studies (NISTADS)
