Having left Russia for several years after killing Lensky in a duel, Onegin returns to St. Petersburg, where he attends a glittering ball which he finds boring. Then he sees Tatyana, who is no longer the young callow girl whose love he spurned years before. She has grown into a glamorous woman. His older cousin, Prince Gremin, tells him that he himself married Tatyana two years ago and that she has transformed his life.
