Woman overcomes broken kneecap without surgery. In this video, Edith discusses how she broke her patella and shares how the staff at Orlando Orthopaedic Center helped her walk again without surgery.
When Edith accidentally fell in her kitchen and slammed her knee into the floor tiles, she knew something wasn’t right. “I had a fall the latter part of August,” says Edith. “I fell to the floor, and I couldn’t get up. My husband, Bob, quickly ran over to me, took a look at my knee, and saw that it was quite swollen. He tried to put ice packs on it but realized right away that it wouldn’t work, and I needed help.”
Edith and Bob turned to Orlando Orthopaedic Walk-in Center for help. And their decision turned out to be a life-changer. “Bob then contacted the Orlando Orthopaedic walk-in center, and I could not thank those people enough for how they helped me,” Edith continues. “They took me in with a wheelchair, saw me immediately, took my x-rays, and I could not have asked for better (care). They got us out in about an hour and a half, including X-rays, analysis, and brace.”
Edith was then referred to Bradd G. Burkhart, M.D., a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, knee, and shoulder surgery at Orlando Orthopaedic Center.
“I cannot thank Dr. Burkhart enough,” says Edith. “They're just beautiful people here. And Dr. Burkhart said to me ‘before we look into any surgery, we're going to try and mend your knee for a good six to eight weeks.’”
“I had the pleasure of seeing Ms. Edith back in August of 2017,” says Dr. Burkhart. “She injured herself when she fell onto her knee, landed right on her tile floor and sustained some pain in her knee. She was treated in our walk-in clinic and then was referred to me for the fracture she sustained.”
“Dr. Burkhart is a warm and friendly doctor,” says Edith. “He said ‘you're going to be fine, and I'll see you again in two weeks.’ The people here are outstanding, they really are. They work with you. They're right there for you if you have to make phone calls or have any questions. They try to help you, and they're all willing to work with you, and that's very important. Especially when you're in a state where you're not feeling the greatest, they're there to cheer you up and make you feel so much better.”
“This is a side view of the knee,” says Dr. Burkhart as he breaks down Edith’s X-rays. “This shows the femur, the tibia, and the patella (kneecap). There is a fracture on the bottom part of the patella here, which we call the inferior pole. And luckily, the fracture is not very displaced, meaning it hasn't shifted apart too far. So the mechanism of the front part of her knee, what we call her extensor mechanism, is still intact. So luckily, Edith didn't need surgery, and we just treated her with conservative measures.”
“Right now, I’m in physical therapy,” says Edith. “I’ve been going for the past four or five weeks, and I cannot thank Dr. Burkhart enough for recommending it. It's unbelievable how I feel, from not being able to stand up at all to now being able to bend my knee and to walk again. Thank you, Dr. Burkhart, you're super.”
