The Umbanda religion is little understood in the West,where the idea that the dead can influence the existence of the living is rejected.
In Rio de Janeiro alone, there are more than 170 temples, some so large they even contain sports fields.
They carry out important social work among the poorest of the population. Trances are an essential aspect of Umbanda sessions; negative energy is removed by means of a "holy friend".

Umbanda ceremonies are based on contact with the Orixás, ​​the gods they mean to reach with the help of ancestors acting as mediators.
Healing spirits enter the head to uncover internal ills through a "third eye" in the center of the forehead. Sometimes they reincarnate in another body.
