"Happy For You" - NPR Tiny Desk Contest 2024 Submission by Rory Lynch, Audrey McLean, and ClearSageLeaf
Hey NPR! We are 'Happy For You' to listen to our song for the #nprtinydesk contest 2024. This is a song about trying to get over a relationship and wanting to be happy for the other person.
I wrote this song back in the fall of 2023. I was taking a recording class where I met Audrey and Sage and we ended up recording the song for our final project. Audrey took my lyrics to new heights and hit notes I couldn't even dream of hitting. The song was meant for her to sing it. Sage wrote his verse the day we recorded the song and I was floored. His verse gives the song such a nice mellifluous, smooth, and soulful tone. Class ended and then the contest came up once again. So, I gathered my favorite musicians and friends and asked them to learn the song for this video. I couldn't be more thankful to all of you! -Rory

Lyrics:
'I wish I could be
Happy for you
Then I’d be free
Remember when we used to be in love
Hanging out with you would be enough
Sometimes I swear we never left the bed
I'm tired of thinking ‘bout you all the time
I got no one to help me drink the wine
I gotta get you out of my head
Step out the front door out onto the sidewalk
Illuminated by the street light
Remember we used to walk sleepy after dinner
Admiring the city at night
Your head on my shoulder
We’d slip around the corner
Kiss like it was our first time
Now all that’s left is silence and some street signs
You said I had to give you up
But that just ain’t fair
Walking with your shadow
But there’s nobody there
I hope that found someone
But if the truth be told
I hope you find no one like me
Oh I wish I could be
Happy for you
Then I’d be free
I can't think straight when I got you on my mind
Sometimes I wish we just could press rewind
Take me back to hanging with you
And pause all the good times
Excuse me if I'm getting out of line
You got me lonely drinking all this wine
I know I should be happy for you
But that would just be a lie
Winter nights, long after dark
Chillin at the park maybe had something to spark
Never really mattered just as long as we were close
With the chills gettin deeper we would still have us a toast
I wonder who you're celebrating with right now
Been a couple months and you're still running around
On the back, on the front, on the side of my mind
In the center of my heart I release you in good time
For now I'll be sippin' that good wine
Been sittin' on the shelf since our very first date
Bought it to remember that day the lucky bottle that you left
Last bit of closure that I throw out of the chest
You said I had to give you up
But that just ain’t fair
Walking with your shadow
But there’s nobody there
I hope that found someone
But if the truth be told
I hope you find no one like me
Oh I wish I could be
Happy for you
Then I’d be free'
