Peter Jauch met Dennis Malcom, Master Distiller @Glen Grant for a chat and of course a whisky tasting.
And these are the tasted products
Glen Grant 12 Years Old is aged in hand-selected ex-bourbon casks and ex-foloroso sherry casks to ensure a balance of aroma and flavor. It is bottled at 43% proof. Before bottling, batches of about 200 casks are blended in barrels for a week. Glen Grant 12 Years Old Single Malt was rated 95 points by Whisky Bible in 2019 and won the double gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2017. It also won the gold medal for "Best Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky Aged 12 13 Years Old" at the International Wine & Spirit Competition, the year it was released
The 15-year-old of Glen Grants whisky is bottled with 50% proof strength. It is aged exclusively in bourbon casks. Despite the increased alcohol content, it comes across as smooth and mellow on the palate. The gentle notes of apple, apricot, honey, vanilla, almond and marzipan show on the palate. Overall, the 15-year-old Glen Grant is rather sweet, fruity and on the light side. And that it also tastes expert is proven by the gold awards at the New York International Spirits Competition 2020 | San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2020| Beverage Testing Institute 2018.
The 18-year-old version of Glen Grant has been available since 2016. Like the 12-year-old, this is bottled at 43% abv. Notes of caramel, vanilla, malt, raisins, spices, and floral hints are evident on the palate. Due to a sherry cask aging, sweetish flavors also come along with the whiskey. The light color of the whiskey also shows that they do not use sugar couleur for subsequent coloring at Glen Grant. Because from the used bourbon barrels comes the beautiful golden yellow color.
