Ebensee Camp was a subcamp of Mauthausen concentration camp established by the SS to build tunnels for armaments storage near the town of Ebensee, Austria, in 1943.
The main purpose of Ebensee Concentration Camp was to provide slave labor for the construction of enormous tunnels in which armament works were to be housed, safe from bombing in World War II.
Between November 18, 1943 and June 30, 1945, 8412 inmates of the Ebensee Concentration Camp whose names were known were murdered or died as a result of imprisonment and forced labor.
8412 names were applied to 156 uncolored glass panels using laser technology.
The underground tunnels at the foot of "Seeberg" are the original traces of forced labor in Ebensee Concentration Camp.
Since 1997, tunnel no. 5 has housed a bilingual documentary exhibition (German/English) on the history of the Ebensee Concentration Camp.
Ebensee Camp is about a 45-minute walk from Ebensee Landungsplatz Train Station and a 15-minute walk from the nearest bus stop (Roith b.Ebensee Landsgraben).
