Bench-to-bedside care is improving outcomes for many head and neck cancer patients at Ohio State.

As a Comprehensive Cancer Center, the OSUCCC – James combines world-class head and neck research with innovative care to give many patients access to groundbreaking treatments before they become available to throughout the country.

“Patients can consider clinical trials to reduce the side effects that they get from a treatment,” Priyanka Bhateja, MD, says. “If their disease looks like it's more aggressive, they may get aggressive treatment that could be approved several years from now.”

Head and neck cancers are among the conditions currently being studied at The James, where patients consult with their treatment teams to determine if they’re eligible for participation in clinical trials, which could include new surgical and radiation procedures.

“Our highly skilled surgeons have come up with this innovative technique where they inject cancer tumors with the dye in the operating room,” Bhateja says. “This improves the outcomes that the patients have in the neck and the shoulder regions.”

More than 200 experts specialize in head and neck cancers at Ohio State, including reconstructive surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists and therapists that assist patients with speech and swallowing during each step of their journeys.
