Jakub "kuben" Gurczyński, former player and in-game leader of Pentagram/MYM/FX/ESC and former coach of Virtus.pro and current coach of Apeks, is the star of the 285th Episode of 'Reflections'.
kuben is one of the most decorated players in CS 1.6 history, with his team winning the most majors. After becoming the player that completed 'The Golden Five' in 2006, he soon set about winning. The World Cyber Games gold medal came first. Next followed the first season of the Intel Extreme Masters and the Esports World Cup 2007.
In 2008, Pentagram became Meet Your Makers and repeated as champions of ESWC. kuben was briefly kicked and replaced but would later rejoin after the team's results floundered. The following year the team would face organisational issues and end up looking for a new home - a common trend going forwards. Attending WCG 2009 without an org they still managed to slay dominant world number ones FNATIC to steal gold from them and bring kuben's tally up to five.
2010 was a fall year, but for winning e-Stars Seoul, and it would be 2011 when the Poles really got back to major winning form. Taking down WCG towards the end of the year and then shocking the world by defeating Na'Vi, who had won four majors of their own, at IEM VI Global Finals, the last ever CS 1.6 major. kuben's haul had reached seven majors won.
In CS:GO the line-up couldn't find success and he soon retired from pro play. He would return to coach NEO, TaZ and pasha in Virtus.pro in 2015 and the team regularly contested the major title and would win big events in memorable fashion. After that project would down in the latter years of the 2010s, kuben tried his hand at international line-ups with the likes of MAD Lions. Now, as the head coach of Apeks, he helped lead his team to the semi-final of the BLAST Paris major, the same site as his famous ESWC win in 2007.
In part one, kuben talks about leadership, the fascinating role-swapping dynamic of his team, each of his team-mates, the introduction of pasha, how the squad overcame personal conflicts and whether they intentionally intimidated foreign opponents.
This interview was recorded on the 14nd of June, 2023.
