From 1865 until 1988, the Missouri Kansas Texas Railway, sometimes known as the MKT or "KATY", served its namesake states with a mainline stretching all the way from St. Louis to Houston. It later became part of the Union Pacific Railroad and was one of the six railroads UP honored in 2006 with a locomotive in a special commemorative livery. In January of 2016, I took a trip up California's Central Coast with some friends to see this special locomotive, UP 1988, pulling a freight train between Oakland and Houston, called the "AOAHO". In this video, we follow the locomotive and train for a day as it travels between King City and San Luis Obispo. My original intent was to turn this into an episode of Heritage Unit Profiles, but I have made the decision to release this part as its own video for now. Let's follow UP 1988 on the Coast Line!
